What is Chiropractic Adjustment?

Chiropractic adjustment is a treatment designed to restore proper alignment and function to the body by correcting "subluxations."  The medical term "vertebral subluxation" refers to a misalignment or slight dislocation of the bones in the spine.  Chiropractors are the only doctors trained to diagnose and treat subluxations.

Traditionally, chiropractic adjustment refers to a quick thrust applied to the vertebra to correct its alignment.  The adjustment is often accompanied by an audible "pop" or "crack" sound that comes from a release of gas (nitrogen, CO2) within the joint, called a "cavitation."  Most patients find that a cavitation brings a feeling of relief, but a small amount of discomfort is normal.

There are 5 different levels of chiropractic adjustment ranging from minor manipulation of the joint (level 1) to a cavitation (level 5).  Many chiropractic doctors focus almost exclusively on level 5 adjustments with the goal of producing a cavitation.

At Wellness Concepts, we customize treatment to your needs and personal preferences.  If a cavitation is inappropriate for a patient due to a health condition, or if the patient wishes to avoid a cavitation "pop", we can use other techniques to adjust the joint and restore balance.  We can focus on more gentle adjustment levels which are typical of physical therapy.  If a full adjustment is beyond the limits for a patient, we work toward full range of motion in the joint (level 4).  It is much better to reach 80% than to do nothing (0%).

What are the benefits of Chiropractic Adjustment?

If the spine is out of alignment, it can lead to Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC).  Untreated VSC can cause a host of problems, including nerve irritation, organ system dysfunction (peptic ulcers, constipation, etc), muscle spasms, pain and inflammation.  Over time, failure to correct subluxations can result in permanent structural changes like arthritis and bone spurs.

Chiropractic treatment is used to improve range of motion, reduce nerve irritation, reduce muscle spasms, reduce pain, and improve overall function of the musculoskeletal system.

What is unique about Chiropractic Treatment at Wellness Concepts?

When you become a patient at Wellness Concepts, you can expect:
  1. Personalized Treatment - We tailor our approach to your unique health needs and preferences.  After a comprehensive assessment, we develop a customized treatment plan just for you.
  2. Blend of Treatments - Wellness Concepts advocates a synergistic combination of chiropractic adjustment, soft tissue work (NeuroVascular Release®, massage therapy), stability exercise and functional nutrition.  We use multiple treatment modalities to help restore balance and optimal health long-term.
  3. Time with a Doctor - Our typical visit is a full 30 minute session with a chiropractic doctor.  During the session, we listen to your current health status and concerns, and we will alter our approach for that visit as needed.  Based on your needs, we may incorporate chiropractic adjustment, NeuroVascular Release®, cold laser, therapeutic ultrasound, electric muscle stimulation (EMS), and other tools as appropriate.  We try to give you the maximum benefit possible in every session.
Our patients often comment on our commitment to comprehensive personalized care. We will never treat you like a number here. We are not a chiropractic factory. We are focused on quality of care, not quantity of patient visits.
