Massage Therapy

Massage is a greatly beneficial therapy.  Depending on your needs, massage may be used in conjunction with the chiropractic adjustment and Manual Therapy Methods®.  It may be complementary to other forms of treatment, or it may be the primary therapy for the patient.  Some patients respond best to a lighter, more gentle global approach.

Massage therapy is a great circulatory modality.  It increases blood flow and oxygen to tissues and nerves, and it can stimulate flow of the lymph system.  It is perfect for health conditions that do not respond well to manipulation of the skeleton, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, immune disorders, severe osteoarthritis, stasis / circulatory problems, and psychological / stress issues.

What are the benefits of Massage Therapy?

Most pain in the body comes from muscles that are tight, overused or injured.  Massage is designed to relax and soften muscles to aid in recovery.  Massage therapy may be used to alleviate back and neck pain, reduce muscle spasms and cramping, improve joint flexibility, promote tissue regeneration, improve lymph flow (supporting the immune system), help athletes prepare for or recover from strenuous workouts, and release endorphins (the body's natural painkiller).

Types of Massage

At Wellness Concepts, we offer multiple types of massage including:

  • Swedish

Comparison with Manual Therapy Methods®

Dr. Kotlarczyk developed Manual Therapy Methods® (MTM) to blend elements of massage therapy and physical therapy with the chiropractic adjustment.  He says that MTM is "a unique massage therapy oriented method of bodywork."

Here is a brief comparison of both treatments:

Massage Therapy
Manual Therapy Methods®

Combines muscle treatment with skeletal and nerve components.  Guided by chiropractic diagnosis.
Passive form of treatment.  Patients generally relax on the table.
More active.  Patients may need to participate in movement during the session.
Sessions are typically 60 minutes.
Sessions are normally 30 minutes.
Suitable for most patients, including inflammatory health conditions.
Suitable for most patients, but may not be appropriate for certain inflammatory health conditions.
